EDU 772 Reflection

What are the 1 - 2 most important things you learned in this course? How will these things be part of your future work as a teacher or librarian?

One thing that has really stuck with me throughout this course are the 21st century learning skills that robotics teaches students. As a general education teacher, I have wondered how I would support my decision to integrate robotics into the classroom if questioned. I now have a strong understanding of how many skills it actually helps to teach students besides the tech skills themselves. I know that by teaching robotics in the classroom, I am teaching my students how to be collaborative and creative learners. Robotics also teaches students about critical thinking and problem solving, both of those skill are needed for all subjects in school as well as careers in their future. I feel confident in my decision to include robotics into my general education classroom, and I feel confident in helping others to see the value in that as well.

What are 1 - 2 things you need to learn next to build upon what you learned in this course? How will you learn these things?

The next step in my robotics learning will be to become more “fluent” in python. I have a general understanding of how to code using Python and could teach others how to do the same projects that I have done, but I do not feel confident enough to teach new projects yet. I do not anticipate Python coming up in my lesson plans for the grade levels that I would be working with, but I know that individual students who may be doing robotics work outside of school require advanced lessons. I plan to continue to use my Edison robot with Edpy to practice my skills and learn new ones. I also plan to use Minecraft education to work on my python reading and writing skills.

Another thing that I would like to build upon is my lesson planning with robotics. I have ideas on how to take existing projects that I’ve done and incorporate robotics with them, but I would like continue to find new and exciting ways to integrate robotics into the classroom. I have already found different social media accounts to follow and videos online to watch that will help spark new ideas for me. I am excited to add more robotics into my own classroom as well as help my teammates to do the same.
